My main limitation is my emotions (or lack thereof except for sadness and feelings of inadequacy). My emotional limitations, in the sense that they are tied almost inextricably to whether I can rationally justify them. I suppose, the insecurity of not “being enough” is the biggest limitation in my life.
With my mention of philosophy: I am in awe at the philosophers I study and have studied under — such as Kripke, Fitting, Freeman, Devitt, etc. They are brilliant, original, and have contributed groundbreaking work in the field. I don’t think my mind was fit to study logic and maths. It was actually very difficult for me to get through the higher level maths, even though I enjoyed it very much. I couldn’t finish my minor and had to take my minor in French, instead. I felt that by pursuing philosophy, I was, indeed, “following my dreams”, but at what cost? I wasn’t being realistic — I didn’t think concretely about my future and how much money I would have to fork out for this graduate degree — or how it is nearly impossible to gain tenure in my case, how many “original” publications you have to push out into prestigious academic journals a year, how little time you have between research, writing, teaching, and the fact that I am socially inept which should have been a sign that I wouldn’t have made a great teacher in the first place.
I never considered myself to be intellectually gifted; I always felt that most of my academic and intellectual merits resulted from me working extraordinarily hard to appease my parents who have come to hold low standards for me, relative to my sister (who they expect big things from).
I think about this a lot, actually. With a career, my main problem is that I feel limited by what I believe to be realistic and rational (such as my belief that I shouldn’t pursue certain things because I’m not good enough). I don’t want to be guided by my “deceptive emotions” — but that thought itself isn’t rational. To escape this limiting belief, I must acknowledge that my motivations, desires, belief systems, basically: the framework in which I perceive myself as an individual tied to a variety of identities (group affiliation, roles I play under various conditions) and relationships are the result of u n.c o n s c i o u s mental processes, many that are not easily accessible to the so-called “rational mind”.
In the end, my belief that I’m not good enough to be a philosopher: I “rationally” believe that I should be realistic with what I am capable of, what my talents are, and I should be honest with who I am. (for example, I have hand tremors so there is no way I can be a surgeon of any kind or work with my hands — that would be unrealistic — anyone who would support me if that was my “passion” or “dream” would be lying and doing me a disservice because I have physical restraints). I want to know I am not pursuing something based off raw passion, and that I actually excel in this field.
To be true to myself, is to 1) be honest about your intellectual and physical limitations (people are good at different things, people have limitations that prevent them from doing what they truly want to do — like I said, I have tremors that makes me physically incapable of doing certain things with my hands. It would be disingenuous for me to choose a career path that warrants absolute precision) 2) this is what I fail at: to be honest about what you ARE capable of, to understand that one instance of failure (er few instances of failures) is not sufficient evidence for you to neglect your would-be potential and cease trying altogether.
I view this as a precarious balance between being realistic to what you know (which includes what you do not know such as your own potential) and the acknowledgement that you do not have an objective or all encompassing perspective of yourself and the world — our view of the world and our role in it is inevitably filtered by insecurities, biases, inexplicable beliefs and thoughts that ultimately guide our underlying brain processes (which as I said previously, is not rational).

On the evolution of morality
Yesterday, a friend made the claim that there is no such thing as morality and that good & bad are simply human social constructions. Moral relativism instinctively puts a bad taste in my mouth as it is a lazy explanation that doesn’t say anything new about what it purports to explain. Even if I knew it was incorrect, I had a difficult time refuting it.
Then I thought about morality in terms of the behavior of primates. Our non human ancestors (primates) have a system of morality if we think of it as a code of conduct. Maybe morality can be reduced to what is evolutionarily advantageous, and as animals develop in intellect, they gain greater capacity to understand morality. I say this because species that are less evolved such as certain breeds of birds will often not act in their best interest (such as by killing their offspring which is maladaptive.)
Unfortunately it is difficult to prove morality isn’t a social construct conjured by humans as a method of behavioral regulation and that there is indeed “objective” concepts of morality that exist in the world. As previously stated, I believe that a species’ understanding of morality increases alongside the progress of their evolution — perhaps they coevolved (the development of certain brain functions). I recently read a book that talks about just this titled Primates and Philosophy: How Morality Evolved where Frans de Waal demonstrate precursors to what we would consider “morality”.
In Primates and Philosophers, Frans De Waal attempts to analyze the origins of human morality through what we would perceive as moral behavior in our non-human ancestors, chimpanzees and other primates. Evolution is selfish, it causes individuals to take whatever actions that is conducive to their survival and reproduction.

And here’s an essay on Definite Descriptions. I try to write in a way where anyone even without a background in philosophy can come to understand what I write:
According to Bertrand Russell, definite descriptions do not function the same way as proper names; instead, definite descriptions act as quantifiers (i.e: words like some, few, all, etc).
An example of an indefinite description is “A king of France” which could potentially point out many objects who fall under the common domain of “kings of France” or “A F”; indefinite descriptions do not name particular objects but only refer to concepts.
A definite description is an expression that picks out a particular unique object, namely “The present king of France” or “The F”. Because definite descriptions sometimes fail to denote or refer to an object (it sometimes fails to have an instance, for example: nonexistent objects which do not have a referent), therefore, definite descriptions cannot function like a proper name because proper names should designate a particular object who is named; instead, definite descriptions act as existential quantifiers.
The statement “the present king of France is bald” is , for Russell, a false statement; I agree with Strawson’s argument that the expression, because it has no valid referent, should be neither true nor false. The present king of France does not exist therefore he cannot be bald or not bald.
The question that Russell proposes regarding “The present king of France is bald” is how can a clearly false statement still be a meaningful one? If definite descriptions acted in the same ways as proper names, then this false expression would be devoid of meaning.
The solution to this is that it is not necessary for definite descriptions to refer because they are not referential expressions, and so it would not matter if the statement in question was empty.
For Russell, “The present king of France is bald” is a propositional function that states, there exists only one unique object which is the present king of France and that same object is bald. The expression “The F is G” contains the quantifying expressions of existence “Ǝ” and uniqueness “Ǝ!x (Fx and Gx)”
An expression like the “The F is G” is still meaningful even if it fails to refer because it acts as an existential quantifier. What would happen with the negation of the form “The F is not G”; the truth value of this statement is dependent on whether the negation takes wide or narrow scope; for example, for the expression “The present king of France is bald”, the sentence is true if the negation takes wide scope whereas it affects the whole of the expression, “It is not the case that there is a king of France and that king of France is bald” (secondary occurrence); this is true because at the time of Russell writing this, there was indeed no present king of France.
If the negation were to take narrow scape it would only affect the predicate and the expression would be, “The present king of France is not bald” (primary occurrence); this statement would be false because there is no present king of France in the first place, therefore the subject that the property of “baldness” is predicated upon does not exist. Because the expression’s truth content is tied to the scope of its negation, the meaning of existential quantifiers appears to him to be ambiguous.
My method for cock ratings:

In my first semester of graduate school, a colleague (a mathematics graduate student) and I started a project called >Title Here<. People come to philosophy for a variety of reasons, whether it be for personal enrichment or as an extension to their academic studies in another field. I feel my book selections are unique because it does not shy away from subjects that are interdisciplinary and tries to choose texts that are not as well known by the public. The purpose of this is to encourage the reader to understand and interpret the text in multiple frameworks and to resuscitate “hidden gems” from obscurity (many philosophers are lesser-known because their work has not been translated to English or are unfortunately overshadowed by some of the bigger names).
For those who are new to philosophy, there may be some trepidation in knowing what topics they want to start with or what is of interest to them. There is also a misconception about philosophy and its relevance to the average person: philosophy is misconceived as a field that has lost its relevance in the modern world. The questions it poses are either unanswerable (therefore pointless to ask in the first place) or have already been answered by the illusion of objectivity reminiscent of 18th Century Enlightenment mentality (I am referring to the pitfalls of Scientism such as having pretensions to absolute Truth and what I would call unrelenting “faith” in something that is fallible and subject to revision rather than any disbelief in the scientific method or its results on my end).
With this project, we hoped to augment the book discovery process with a curated book delivery service. Conversations are the natural place where debaters and intellectuals express their interests. Our process was to engage our members in discussions centered on the philosophical sciences, table our chats, and use these insights into member interests to mail them engaging works of literature or philosophy.
When readers visit a bookstore it is often the books one should read that win out. It offered a unique way to find books by basing book recommendations off conversations with its members. I thought this approach would lead to new and diverse book selections. It was noted that my expertise is in the philosophical sciences, and all the books were purchased second hand to keep costs low.
In the second photo is an example of the chat service we designed that allows us to get to know more about the customer’s tastes and preferences in order to make the perfect match.

I got my new laptop finally! Woo! I am going to try to find a good consistent time to stream. I have to figure out what my schedule will be like for my day job since I will be working with an additional client, who I will be meeting alongside his parents later today. Both the Enlightenment and Romanticism took part in the destruction of nature , the former utilizing it as a method in their attempt to claim monopoly on all that is natural, the latter, too, reduces it to a petrified image which places it at a distance, in which consequently, furthers the alienation of man and his origin (nature). Both , to some extent, posit nature as an external object that is readily apt for manipulation. The enlightenment’s denaturalization project is one which depicts man as physically exercising his will over nature through scientific investigation, but the Romantics, in their attempt in reviving nature and that of the sublime through the Aesthetic experience, they, too, propagated the acceleration of modernism by their imposing unto nature (through modern art), a fictional harmonious identity (of nature and its relation to man) by which man utilizes nature as an object and as a means to this object through the act of conceptually arresting the object which it is transposed to that of appropriation and is no longer the original object but that of man’s creation and the empty remainder of his “will to power”.
Romanticism was a movement, emerging out of a period of what I would refer to as, disillusioned empowerment; it was a transition from The Age of Enlightenment, known for its abundance of scientific advancements, its rejection of authority, and any faith based system that is not apt for empirical study. I called the Enlightenment “disillusioned empowerment” because this movement represents what I believe Goethe portrayed through the character of Faust. Faust desired to gain Absolute Knowledge , which too, mirrors the Enlightenment’s attitude of substituting its faith from the church into itself whereas progress was to be achieved through the reliable use of human reason and its negation of the metaphysical phenomena outside of empirical experience. A lot of what seemed to be at the time, incomprehensible, was at once, elucidated which included a wide ranging amount of discoveries extending from the chemical compounds that make up water to the proof of a heliocentric universe. In this sense, the mysteries of the universe began to be illuminated all at once; the light of human reason was the indispensable force in unveiling a future where knowledge is readily accessible by which man was able to transcend his finite limitations and potentially become god.
Amidst the innumerable discoveries made during the Enlightenment, it appeared as if the objects and external noumena that was once inexplicable and attributed to a higher power, can now be reduced to a mathematical formula. The world began to open itself up as that which could be known and it was through man’s faith in human reason, that this was to be accomplished. Goethe’s rejection of the values held by the Enlightenment was depicted through the created framework by which the characters and plot are structured and confined within a self-contained system as designated by God and his natural processes. Faust’s pact with Mephistopheles represented man’s disavowal of nature whereas man is seen to be impinging upon these purported boundaries in his attempt to take immediate possession of all that is unknown and not yet subject to his speculation. This act of hubris is an active rejection of God's intended will for the world and mirrors that of the ungrateful c h I l l d who is given what is necessary by his or her well-intended parents, but continues to beg for more; similar to the petulance of a c h I l l d, man is never satisfied because the gap in which situates the unknown, will continue to exponentially widen at a faster rate than the confirmed certainty in which man is in perpetual pursuit of. Man’s intended position is that of subservience to the natural order (as willed by god) ; this insatiable conquest of knowledge by inorganic means characterizes what Romanticism feared to be man’s eventual destruction of the natural world in his pursuit of gaining mastery over it. They seeked to suspend the process of "modernization" by initiating the call to innocence, the return to a primitive earth not yet besmirched by man.
The Romantic movement isn't a passing presence that shed it's imprint once upon history and fades only into a relic , both treasured and sustained by the fragmented interests of time; when referring to Romanticism , it's important to elaborate upon its unique and distinguishing features that reflect, not only its historical and aesthetic context, but the ways in which these features are a representation of the undergoing conflict between itself and its determination. Romanticism is entirely spiritual and religious in its essence; being a direct witness to what they felt, may have been, an injustice or an affront to the creator, they harbored the guilt of its previous generations' physical and metaphorical demolition of nature, in which, through their art, they believed the relationship between nature and man was to be reconciled. Art became almost an Utopia, in the sense that it was capable of exercising its existence in realms outside of that which was irreconcilable in reality; Frankenstein, undertook the divine role of creation upon himself and it was through this “conquest of death” that the Romantics , too, became a victim to its production of a monster with potential of destroying its creator.
